August 14, 2025 · In: Habits & Routines, Intentional Living, Personal Development

We all want to grow.

For some, that means becoming more confident or making more money. For others, growth might simply mean feeling better about life.

Whatever it looks like for you, one thing is certain — growth is never a linear. It’s a journey filled with challenges, setbacks, and plenty of moments that test your faith and patience.

And here’s the tricky part: sometimes, it’s not the “big” roadblocks that are holding us back, but the small, seemingly harmless things we do every day that’s keeping us stuck in limbo.

They are daily habits that often run on autopilot — little routines, thought patterns, or ways of doing things that quietly sabotage your progress and hinder your growth.

In this post, I will share 10 habits you need to break now so you can stop holding yourself back and start creating the positive growth you’ve been working toward.

10 Habits You Need To Break Now

10 habits you need to break now

1. Be honest with yourself

Change starts with you.

And that means being completely honest — even when it’s uncomfortable.

What needs to change?
What makes you feel uneasy?
What’s keeping you stuck?
What are your fears and triggers?

I know these aren’t easy questions but being honest with yourself is the key to move you forward.

When you have the courage to face your weaknesses and acknowledge what needs to change, you create a solid foundation for the steps you will take in your self-improvement journey.

2. Surrounding yourself with the wrong people or environments

Sometimes, the problem isn’t what’s inside us — it’s what’s around us.

Take a look at your surroundings.

Do they energize you?
Make you feel grounded?
Or do they drain you and put you on edge?

This could be the people you spend time with, the atmosphere at home, or even the vibes in your local coffee shop.

A simple audit of how it makes your nervous system feel can quickly determine if something is right for you. If it makes you feel off, shaky or ungrounded, then consider it as your sign that something needs to change.

Feeling sluggish or tired lately? It might be the stagnant energy in your space. Discover the 12 commonly missed spots in your home that, once cleaned, can help refresh the energy and leave you feeling lighter and more energized.

3. Negative words and negative thinking

Your words matter. So do your thoughts.

Even when they seem harmless, they have the power to slow your progress — or stop it altogether.

This isn’t about being toxic positive or pretending everything’s fine. It’s about being mindful of how you speak to yourself and others, and choosing words that don’t sabotage your own growth.

It’s equally important to be pay attention to the content you consume as they also have the power to shape the way you think and act. These content might include social media (TikTok, Instagram, etc), news, books and music.

4. Neglecting self-care

You can’t pour from an empty cup.

If you’re constantly on low energy, it’s going to be very hard to create positive and sustainable change.

Self-care is going to look different for everyone, but doing the basics like getting enough sleep (6-8 hours), eating nourishing food, and moving your body is a great foundational start to your well-being.

Remember, taking care of yourself isn’t selfish — it’s necessary.

If for any reason, you feel guilty, unworthy or undeserving of self-care, consider speaking to a therapist to help you find why and ways to overcome those feelings.

5. Constant comparing yourself to others

Comparison is the thief of joy and growth.

The only person you should compare yourself to is who you were yesterday, last month, or the year before.

Your goal is to grow into the best version of you, not to “win” against someone else (which, by the way, is a waste of time).

Focus on your lane and stick to it.

6. Being too rigid

Life happens. Circumstances changes.

If you’re too rigid in your thinking or your methods, you might miss better opportunities along the way.

Be firm with your goals but flexible with your plans.

Stay open-minded.

When you adapt, you create space for unexpected and often better outcomes.

7. Not slowing down

It’s counterintuitive.

But the quickest way to create lasting change is often by slowing down.

When you rush, you make mistakes, skip important steps, or get stressed out.

Slowing down allows you to move with intention, make better choices, and actually get to where you want to be… faster.

8. Avoiding failure

Many people never start because they’re afraid to get it wrong.

But the truth is, you will get it wrong even if you plan it right.

So…you might as well do it (even if it scares you).

Because it’s not the right or wrong that matters but the lessons and experiences you get.

Every mistake teaches you something valuable and sharpens your ability to do better next time.

Remember: failure is growth, growth is failure. They are an uncompromisable pair that can’t be seperated.

9. Putting things to later

There’s a fine line between preparation and procrastination.

And that’s where many get stuck on.

They want to change, but they feel like they don’t have all the tools to “be ready” for change.

So they end up researching, organizing, making lists and doing all the necessary to “be ready” but in fact they are avoiding the actual work.

Change requires action. And the best way to move forward is to simply start, even if you don’t feel completely prepared.

Ironically, once you start you will realise that you’re more ready than you think. But to find out, you have to act on it.

10. Caring what others think

Nothing slows down personal growth faster than living for other people’s approval.

When you constantly worry about what others might say or think, you end up making decisions that please them instead of choices that align with your own values and goals.

Focus on what matters to you, not them.

Positive growth happens when you live authentically, not when you’re trying to fit into someone else’s version of who you “should” be.

Reflection Moment

Sometimes the unhealthy habits that hold us back aren’t obvious. They can feel normal because they’ve become part of our daily routines. Taking a few minutes to pause and reflect can help you see which habits are truly helping you move forward, and which ones may be keeping you stuck.

  1. How do your current routines reflect the priorities you care most about?
  2. List all the current habits that don’t support your goals.
  3. Which routines leave you feeling drained, rushed, or overwhelmed?
  4. If you could change just one daily habit this month, what would it be and why?
  5. What is one habit you maintain out of obligation or familiarity rather than intention?
  6. How do your current habits reflect the life your want to create?
  7. What usually triggers the habits you want to break?
  8. How might your life look different six months from now if you let go of one limiting habit?

Conclusion

Positive growth isn’t just about hustling harder or stacking new habits on top of old ones.

It’s also about getting real with yourself and letting go of the subtle, everyday patterns that’s quietly holding you back.
