7 Steps On How To Write A Letter To Your Future Self

April 17, 2025 · In: Intentional Living, Journal Prompts, Lifestyle, Self-Love

A surprise from my past me has taught me how to write a letter to my future self, and now I want to share that with you.

A few years ago, I attended an afternoon tea event where the staff did something a little unexpected at the end.

They handed each of us a pen, paper, and an envelope, and asked us to write a letter to our future selves. They told us they’d mail it to us in one year.

So I wrote.

It was nothing fancy—just what was going on in my life at the time, what I was feeling, and a few things I secretly hoped for.

Then, like most things, I completely forgot about it.

Until, one year later, that letter arrived in the mail.

At first, I didn’t recognize it and wondered, “Who wrote me a letter?”

And then, upon looking closer at the handwriting, I realized the letter was from me—a letter I had written to myself a year ago.

Honestly, I was shocked and surprised—not just because I had forgotten about it, but because everything I had hoped for in that letter came true.

At the time, I didn’t know anything about The Secret, the law of attraction, or manifestation. I hadn’t written the letter with any rituals or set intentions.

The only thing I did was write from the heart, without pressure or expectations. And maybe that’s why it worked and why everything in that letter manifested.

Ever since that experience, it has become a ritual of mine to write a letter to my future self every year.

Why Write A Letter To Your Future Self

There’s something powerful about writing a letter to your future self.

The idea might seem simple—but the intention behind it is anything but.

It’s personal, magical, and even healing.

Writing to your future self gives you a chance to pause and reflect. To check in with where you are right now, and where you hope to go (let’s be honest—those hopes can sometimes get lost in the hustle and bustle of life).

It captures a moment in time—your mindset, your emotions, your hopes—and stores it like a time capsule that you can revisit later.

You might forget about the letter (like I did), but when you read it back, it’s like a walk down memory lane… reminding you of who you were and how far you’ve come.

Here are a few more reasons why this simple practice is worth trying:

  • It helps clarify your goals and desires
  • It gives you perspective, shows your growth, and highlights how far you’ve come
  • It reminds you of what truly matters to you
  • It can act as a quiet form of manifestation—even when unintentional
  • It invites honesty, emotional vulnerability, and self-connection
  • It’s a great way to nurture self-love, self-care, and your relationship with yourself

Writing this future letter is an intimate way to connect with yourself, and it can move you in the most unexpected ways.

Because in the end, this is a letter to you, about you, for you.

How To Write A Letter To Your Future Self

Now that you know why it’s worth doing, let’s talk about how to actually write one.

how to write a letter to your future self in 7 easy steps

1. Choose a time frame

Decide when you want your future self to read the letter.

A year? Six months? Five years?

You can even write multiple letters for different points in the future.

2. Start with the present moment

Begin by writing about your life right now.

What’s going on in your life? What are you thinking or feeling? What’s exciting? What’s been on your mind lately?

If you’re not sure how to begin, try these simple prompts:

  • “Dear Future Me, today I feel…”
  • “Dear Future Me, how are you today?”
  • “Dear <insert your name>, I hope…

Let your thoughts flow and don’t hold back. Remember, you don’t need to impress anyone—this letter is just for you.

3. Talk about your hopes and dreams

This is a letter to your future self—a version of you that’s living your goals and dreams.

So share with them what you hope for. What goals do you want to accomplish? What are your dreams and aspirations?

It’s also important to talk about how you want to feel. A year from now, how do you hope your life looks and feels? What do you want to change—or maybe keep the same?

4. Offer encouragement

This part isn’t always necessary, but it can be really comforting.

Think about what your future self might need to hear.

A reminder to stay strong?
A message of compassion?
Words you wish someone would say to you right now?

This is your chance to be your own cheerleader.

5. Don’t overthink it

A letter to your future self isn’t a school assignment—it’s a conversation between you and… well, you.

Let go of structure, grammar, or perfection.

Write as you please, and express yourself in the way that feels most comfortable to you.

6. Be raw, be honest, be you

The most important part? Be honest. Be vulnerable. Be yourself.

Don’t write what you think you should say.
Write what you need to say.

You don’t need the perfect intention or the perfect words. You just need a moment of honesty with yourself.

Even if it comes out messy. Even if it doesn’t make sense. That’s where the magic happens.

7. Seal it (or schedule it)

If you’re writing a physical letter, seal it in an envelope and mark the “open on” date.

If you’re going digital, use an online service like FutureMe.org that emails your letter back to you at a chosen date.

Dear Future Me

Who would have thought that a simple letter could have such a big impact on my life, that it has now become an annual ritual?

What I love most about writing letters to my future self is that I get to reflect, reconnect, and bring myself closer to the person I aspire to become.

It gives me a sense of safety and reassurance—that no matter what happens, I’ll be okay, everything will be okay.

I hope what I shared today offers you some guidance and inspiration, and can help bring you a little closer to your future self too.
