So you’ve cleaned your place but you still don’t feel like it’s clean-cleaned.

Chances are you’ve missed some dirty spots that have gone unnoticed.

These often-overlooked areas can harbor dust, grime, and germs, impacting both the cleanliness of our living spaces and our overall health and well-being.

Today, let’s explore the 12 most commonly missed cleaning spots. Be sure to add them to your spring cleaning or regular home cleaning checklist for a refreshed and tidy home.

1. Ceiling Fans and Light Fixtures

Ceiling fans and light fixtures are notorious dust collectors that seem to hide themselves very well.

We don’t see or touch them often so they go unnoticed very easily.

Take a few extra moments, go around each room, and carefully wipe them down. This not only keeps the dust (and allergies) at bay but also ensures cleaner air circulating in your home.

2. Baseboards

Baseboards are often overlooked and can easily accumulate dust and grime.

Grab a damp sponge or microfiber cloth to thoroughly clean them. Finish off the cleaning by wiping your baseboard with a dryer sheet; this prevents dusts from building up so easily.

Consider using a scented dryer sheet, it’s lighter than air freshener, and adds an extra aroma around the home.

3. Air Vents, Ducts and Filters

Air vents, ducts and filters must always be cleaned, and cleaned regularly. They play a vital role in maintaining good air quality around your home.

Consider wearing gloves and a mask before cleaning them as it can get quite dusty and dirty. Use a vacuum, brush, and cloth to wipe them down. Replace old or worn out filters.

Don’t forget to clean out the filters from your dehumidifier, air purifier, humidifier, heaters and air conditioner.

4. Behind and Under Appliances

Out of sight, out of mind.

The back and bottom of refrigerator, stove, and other large appliances are the commonly missed spots that needs desperate cleaning. You’ll be surprised at the crumbs, debris and often lost items that find their way into these hidden spaces.

Other forgotten appliances or household items includes the television, stereo, and tv / gaming boxes. Make sure to unplug all electrical cord before any cleaning, and allow the item to dry thoroughly before replugging it back to the wall.

5. Inside Cabinets and Drawers

You’d be surprise how much dust, hair, dirt and even food crumbs can be found inside of cabinets and drawers.

Empty them out and wipe all sides and bottom thoroughly, paying extra attention to the corners, drawer tracks and handles. While you’re at it, declutter and reorganize your items and discard any old or expired products.

6. Door Handles and Light Switches

Door handles, light switches and any high-touch areas are hotspots for germs and bacteria.

To prevent the contact and spread of germs, these areas should be cleaned and disinfected regularly. It’s best to wipe down all high touch areas at least once a day or after a guest visit.

7. Window and Door Tracks

A clean window isn’t fully cleaned until all the dust and dirt are removed from the window tracks. This goes the same for all sliding door tracks like the patio, shower and closet doors.

When cleaning make sure every nook and cranny is covered as dirt and grime like to hide themselves in unseen places.

8. Trash Bins

This one requires deep cleaning, and should actually be cleaned at least once a month.

Trash bins can harbor unpleasant odors and bacteria. Disinfect and wipe down the inside and outside of your bins to ensure a clean and sanitary waste disposal area.

9. Shower Heads and Shower Curtains

There’s a misconception that shower heads self-cleanses because it comes in contact with water every day.

But in fact they need manual cleaning.

Shower heads can accumulate alot of mold, mildew and buildup from leftover water droplets to the damp bathroom environment.

To clean it, fill a bag with vinegar, immerse the shower head in the bag and let it soak for at least an hour. Then use an old toothbrush to scrub away any remaining residues and turn on water to rinse out the vinegar from the shower head.

The same goes for shower curtains. Whatever material you use, cotton, vinyl and polyester or microfibre, they all need to washed regularly.

10. Behind the Toilet

It’s probably the least favourite but it’s a must.

A clean toilet bowl and seat isn’t enough unless the area behind and around it is cleaned as well.

Dust, grime, and mildew can accumulate, if left unattended, the buildup can cause damage to the toilet. Keeping this area clean is essential for personal hygiene and overall wellbeing.

11. Remote Controls and Electronics

Similar to door handles and high touch areas, electronic devices like remote controls and smartphones are items frequently touched but rarely cleaned.

These frequent touched items should be cleaned and disinfected daily. Wipe them down with a disinfectant to prevent the spread of germs and bacteria.

12. Underside of Furniture

Dust, debris and lost items love to hide underneath furniture.

The process of cleaning this requires the most labour because they are large and heavy. So let’s deep clean them once and for all. Move your sofas, beds and any large furniture for a thorough cleaning and vacuuming.
